It would seem like the days of storing files and documents on your local network may be numbered due to the recent interest in cloud services. If you don’t know what cloud services are then here’s a brief overview:
What the cloud is all about
About a decade ago, when we were all using floppy disk, if someone ran up to you and told you that you wouldn’t have to store files and information on physical mediums in the future, you’d probably laugh and dismiss it. But now, cloud storage is so mainstream that it’s making flash drives, and hard drives almost look obsolete. Cloud related services basically allow you to host files, work spaces, and desktops on a private server that you can access anywhere at any time.
The applications/benefits
There are a multitude of applications and innovations that cloud related services have brought along with it. Most of these benefits and applications simply can’t be achieved through traditional methods. Here are just a few of the benefits of utilizing a cloud service.
- Disaster recovery becomes a lot more easier to manage. If your office or headquarters is suddenly destroyed or damaged by a natural disaster, your business files and information would be relatively safe due to cloud storage. Just imagine the countless hours you would save and you could pick up right where you left off.
- Productivity can now be achieved beyond the workspace. With cloud work spaces now employees and managers alike can access their work space from their homes, commutes, and anywhere else essentially.
- Information has never been more secure. Protection from viruses, malware, and spyware, make cloud services look even more appealing. Think about it. If your entire office somehow get’s a nasty virus that spreads to each desktop on the network, would you rather have all of your files compromised or would you rather have them secure and somewhere safe?
Cloud-based computing for businesses has certainly become more prominent, but that doesn’t mean we should all just suddenly stop using what’s been working for us before. No, this just means we should utilize both traditional and modern methods of security to make sure we’re covered all around. It never hurts to have a backup plan for your backup plan after all. So, keep using flash drives, hard drives, and company servers, but make sure you also heavily consider the convenience and benefits of cloud storage.
